Nyepi’ is a
Hindu holiday that is celebrated annually. On year 2013, Nyepi falls on Tuesday, March 12, 2013.
The main purpose of Nyepi is pleading before God Almighty, to purify Buwana Alit (Human Side / Microcosmos) and Buwana Agung / Macrocosmos (the universe).
There are several series of exercising
Nyepi day, they are:
The Hindu people perform purification ceremonies also called
Melis Melasti / Mekiyis. On that day, all the existing means of praying in the temple (shrine) in procession to the
beach or lake, as the sea or lake is the source of holy water (
Tirta Amerta) and can purify all “
leteh” (gross) in man and nature.
The day before Nyepi, namely the “
Tilem Sasih Kesanga” (the 9th Black Moon), Hindus perform ritual
Bhuta Yadnya at all levels of society, ranging from individual families, hamlets, villages, districts, and so on, to take one one of the types ‘
Caru’ (sort of offerings) according to his ability.
Tawur or
Pecaruan itself a consecration /
Pemarisuda Bhuta Kala, and all ‘
leteh’ (defilement) is expected to vanish all.
Bhuta Yadnya is addressed to the
Bhuta Raja, Bhuta Kala and
Bahtara Kala , by pleading that they do not disturb people.
Followed by Mecaru Pengerupukan ceremony, the spread Tawur rice, torched house and the yard and hitting any objects (usually drums) to sound crowded / noisy.
This stage is done to drive Bhuta Kala from the house, the yard, and the environment.
Lodging in Bali,
Pengrupukan usually celebrated with a parade of
Ogoh-Ogoh which embodies
Bhuta Kala who paraded around the neighborhood, and then burned. The aim is the same, namely expelled
Bhuta Kala from the surrounding environment.
Summit of Nyepi Day, In today’s atmosphere as dead. No busy activity as usual. On this day Hindus perform “Catur Brata” Penyepian which consisting of ‘Amati Geni’ ( no fire/light), ‘Amati Karya’ (did not work), ‘Amati Lelungan’ (not traveling/not allowed to exit the house yard), and ‘Amati Lelanguan’ (not listening entertainment).
And for those that can also perform
Tapa Brata, Yoga, and Semadhi. No activity as usual. All activities were eliminated, Including public services, such as the International Airport, Harbor was closed, but not for hospitals.
Ngembak Geni, a day after the feast day of
Nyepi, all the activity back on track. On this day the
Saka New Year for a second day. Hindus did “
Dharma Shanti” with a large family and neighbors, give thanks and sorry forgive each other, to begin a new year a clean sheet.
