The festival began back in 1979, and was joined by many participants of the . The kite festival attracts thousands of participants and kite lovers who flood the arena with kites of different varieties, styles, colors and sizes.

Some include , and . The sizes of the kites are in the range between 4 meters – 10 meters in length. Janggan kites usually black, red and white, with a long tail of up to 200 meters. Some of the more traditional Balinese kites, the Bebean (a fish), Janggan (bird-shaped) and Pecukan (leaf-shaped) and also on display with kite building lessons on offer following the festival.
